Frequently Asked Questions About PAINT PROTECTION FILM

Questions about Paint Protection Film?

Here are answers to some common questions.

Our Best Q & A's

  • How Much Does Paint Protection Film Cost?

The big question, we get it. Unfortunately there is now small, medium, or large.  Our cost varies depending on the film you choose, the amount of coverage you want installed, and the vehicle you have (as in area, think jeep wrangler vs F250).  That being said, we unfortunately won't be the cheapest in town either.  Our products are top of the line, our team is even better, and our company stands by both so we pay top tier for both.

  • Can Film Be Installed On Your Windshield?

fresh herb No. The impact absorbency of film is much higher than that of a windshield.  When a PPF film is applied to a window shield this refractive difference would cause a distorted/foggy/ almost dirty look that you as the customer would absolutely not accept.

  • How Deep of a Cut Can the Film Heal on its Own?

The clear coat is the self healing layer and is approximately 13 microns thick.

  • What Is the Expected Life of the Film?

Our films almost always outlive their warranties which range from 5-12 years. Warranties cover yellowing, staining, delaminating, peeling, crackling, bubbling, and more.

  • What are the Benefits of Having PPF on My Vehicle?

The primary objective is to protect your vehicle from the elements. Whilst a PPF won’t stop a large stone from high speed damaging your vehicle, it will keep it protected from general stone chips and everyday wear and tear. Not only is this good news for aesthetic reasons, it also helps maintain the value of your vehicle by keeping it looking newer than it otherwise would. If the PPF is cared for and remains undamaged, the paint beneath will still look as good as new if you ever get tired of the look and decide to remove the film yourself.

  • How do I wash the film, can I use a quick detailer or detail spray?

You can use any standard ‘off the shelf’ car wash soap, rinse-free car wash or more specialized detail spray to keep the film clean. However, you must check the label to make sure that your chosen product doesn’t contain more than 5% naphtha or kerosene.

Life with Paint Protection Film

  • Can I Run My Car Through An Automatic Car Wash With PPF Applied?

Technically, yes.  We just ask that you wait a full 48 hours before running it through.  If it was us, we'd give a whole 2 weeks and Paul wants me to include that he wouldn't do it at all.

  • Can “coatings” be applied to Paint Protection Film?

Ceramic coatings are approved for use with our Paint Protection Films when applied over the surface of the product. Ceramic coatings create an additional barrier for solvent and water penetration while not negatively impacting the performance or self-healing of our Paint Protection Film. This application will not void your warranty.

  • If there is a stain that won’t wash off, what do I do?

If a stain will not wash off with a regular car wash, you can apply isopropyl alcohol to a microfiber towel and clean the stain, if that does not work you can use a small amount of lacquer thinner. If the stain remains we would recommend you use a mild-abrasive wax and polish the surface of the film to restore the original appearance. Polishing/buffing of the film is a great way to remove contaminants from the surface, however this process should be limited to as-needed or once every 12- 18 months. An example of a mild-abrasive wax would be Turtle Wax Renew RX Polishing Compound Light to Medium Cleaner.

Installation & Removal

  • Should I wax my car prior to Paint Protection Film installation?

It is not recommended to apply wax or any coatings to your vehicle prior to having Paint Protection Film installed. Any waxes or coatings can interfere with proper adhesion of the film to the vehicle.

  • How soon after installation can I drive my vehicle?

In an ideal situation, an installer will have the vehicle 24 hours to monitor the film for any lifting edges before releasing the vehicle to the owner. In situations where this is not possible, we strongly recommend at least a 2-3 hour waiting period indoors followed by an inspection to ensure all edges are sealed before the vehicle is released.

  • How do I remove Paint Protection Film?

Film should be lifted at a 45-degree angle and pulled towards yourself; this will cause the adhesive to release. Do Not fold the film over on itself and rip it off, this can leave adhesive behind. In cold weather environments, we recommend a steamer to aid in softening the film/adhesive for removal.

Paint Protection Film Technology

  • How does the self-healing work?

LLumar Paint Protection Film contains a proprietary top coat. This top coat protects the urethane against surface scratches. The majority of surface scratches will self-heal when exposed to heat – sun, warm panel (motor running), warm water, etc. We demonstrate this with a copper wire brush to simulate surface scratches that will self-heal such as surface dirt, sand, salt, etc.

  • Will LLumar Paint Protection Film turn yellow?

LLumar Paint Protection Film C, Matte and Ultra series are protected against yellowing. Our top coat protects the Paint Protection Film against harmful solvents that are in gas, oil, bird droppings, car exhaust, etc. that can absorb into the film and cause yellowing.

  • Will paint with and without Paint Protection Film fade differently?

The area protected with Paint Protection Film will likely fade at the same rate as the unprotected area.
